On 22 February 2007 a flame was lit at Baden-Powell's
grave in Kenya. Since then it has crossed Africa and Europe. On 1 August it
was at Brownsea Island
for the Sunrise ceremony and then after that it went to
the World Jamboree at Hylands Park near Chelmsford. You can
check the
spirit flame website for more information including the
route
of the flame.

The spirit flame procession is similar
to that of the Olympic flame. On Monday 30 July the flame passed through West Sussex as ran between Henfield and
Petersfield. It moved between the villages by open top
double decker bus but was paraded through the streets at Billingshurst, Petworth and Midhurst. It
was a great
honour to be able to escort the flame and should
be a special memory for those that took part.
The picture shows the Petworth &
Pulborough contingent that went with the flame as it left our
District and was handed over to Hampshire Scouts at Petersfield.
The flame itself is being held by our District Commissioner and
we have representatives from the District Explorers, District
Team, 1st Wisborough Green and of course Parbrook Cubs. There
are more pictures of the day on
our fotopic site.
The
County Times
printed our story in their 17 August 2007 edition.
District Commissioner for
Petworth & Pulborough District Scouts, Loo Rosser said "I'm
delighted that that the Spirit Flame has come through our
District and that so many people turned out to support us. You
only get one chance at doing the Centenary of Scouting and we
hope it will be a year to remember. In years to come the young
people who carried the flame will be able to look back and
remember that they were part it."
